Assembly Line CHALLENGE

The Goal:
  • Mark 6 number cubes
  • Unite with other stations
  • Fast and Efficient
The solution:
  • At first we wanted to have more programming and make it rotate
  • Then instead we just made a "drop-box" design

Achievements accomplished: 14

Class Achievements:
Implementation" - The assembly line made it throw with only a couple of quick fixes. But in the real world that would give people jobs by fixing the machine quickly

"Fast!" - The first trial was 1:07 but then again we only had four dice

"Faster!!" - In the second trial we got the dice to make it in 51 seconds

"No Half Stepping" - We completed ours in about 3 days but it was changed by another group due to not functioning consistently

"Don't Dilly Dally" - Same as "No Half Stepping"

"Stewardship" - We put all of our parts away in the proper place in about a day

Team Achievements:
"If you Build It..." - We originally wanted to make the sorter rotate but we came across many obstacles so instead we came up with a well working design and pursued it

"Proof is in the Pudding" - Since our station was the last, we only had to worry about the group in front of us. So we planned accordingly and made a solution that made an easy transition between the two stations

"Round and Round We Go" - We noticed that our original design was too heavy on one side and it would take too long to program it, so we came up with a new more proportional solution

"No Soliciting" - Since we worked with the group next to us we asked them about our solution. At first it was fine, then near the end of the project they changed it which must have meant something was wrong. They said that it wasn't consistent so they fixed it.

"Leave no Trace" - Everything was cleaned and put away nicely

Individual Achievements:
"Keep the Customer in Mind" - I have a couple of paragraphs but they are like bullet point because they are straight to the point

"Nice One!" - Thomas Luppi because he put in helpful information to help make a better solution

"Helping Hand" - Cody Kitchener (spelling) because he help us put his teams solution and our solution together to make a smooth transition

P.S. I'm sorry but I do not have any picture due to the fact that Jackson's phone was dead at the time and my phone doesn't have the feature of removing pictures from the memory.

Define the Problem:
  • People that own a small living space have difficulty storing their bikes in their house.
  • Difficult to get around
  • Traffic in the house

Brainstorm Solutions:
  • Store behind a door but make sure the door can open
  • Get another mode of transportation
  • Hang your bike
  • Model buyers bike like a peice of are
  • Store in a barely used closet/ room

Define Criteria and Constraints:
  • Criteria
    • Bike storage
    • easy to assemble
    • Safe
  • Constraints
    • No permanent damage
    • Work for any bike

Sketches

Pully system that attaches to the ceiling without permanent damage

 Other modes of Transportation

Use a Decision Matrix to justify your approach
sorry it's hard to read, other modes won but the buyer wants to keep their bike

Locker Organizer

Locker Idea #1: a rack to put lunch on top so the books don't smash the food. There are walls to seperate each class period so a student can easily grab what they need. To get pencils easily there is a magnetic pencil holder on the locker door.
Locker Idea #2: There are layers/ shelfs for each period and students can organize the order of the books any way they please. A magnetic pencil holder is on the locker door

Locker Idea #3: the student puts their books in a slanted shelf at the bottom of the folders their are drawers and the bottom drawer is cooled for lunches, next to it is a pencil holder

These ideas aren't to scale yet but will be when i redo the designs

TED

1) What is the TED organization about?
Spreading ideas worth sharing

Part II of the TED activity will have you negotiate within a group to select the "best" video to represent the group. The student with the chosen video will recieve extra credit. The group will then prepare a short presentation that summarizes the talk and will present to the class. The class will choose the best presentation and that group will recieve extra credit.

2) What is the purpose of their website and how does the functionality of their site support that?
  • Have videos for people all over the world to watch
  • Spread ideas to enhance technology for a better lifestyle
  • Videos are in categories based on what conferences TED has
3) As Engineers and Problem Solvers, which topic areas (the choices from the "Show talks related to:" section on the sidebar) are of most interest to us? Justify your answer.
The best videos for engineers are:
  • Science: help understand the world around us
  • Technology: enhance so we can have a brighter future
  • Lifestyle: understand what's going through other people's brain
4) Based on your previous answer, what are 3 talks (videos) on the site that appear like they would be of most interest to you as an Engineer/Problem Solver? Justify your choices.
  •  Iain Hutchison: Saving Faces- for better technology for people who lost or never had the face they have always wanted
  • Cynthia Breazeal: The rise of personal robots- to have robots react with humans on a personal level
5) Each student will watch a unique video. Select a video to watch and inform Mr. Olson of your choice. If no one else has "claimed" the talk, you will be allowed to proceed with it. If someone else has already chosen the talk, you will be asked to pick another one. Watch the video. Create and post a bulletized outline of the key issues presented in the talk.
The video talks about
  • The advancements in technology
  • The possibilities that can become a reality
  • The science feild is expanding
6) How could you get involved in the field/technology/issue you chose to hear about? What experience/skills/training/education would you need to learn to get involved with this field?
If a person wanted to get involved in this field they would have to:
  • Master in a medical field
  • be a plastic suregon or know how to do plastic surgery
  • think beyond the average human

Funtional Analysis

1. What is the purpose or primary function of the object?
To provide entertainment

2. Make an educated guess as to how this product operates. Use simple machines’ terminology to explain the object’s sequential operation.

4. What mechanical components are visible?
  • The buttons
  •  The touch screen
  • The game the player inserts
  •  The reclining top visible.

5. What is it about this device’s function that you cannot identify, because the mechanical components are hidden from plain view?
  • Electricity going through
  • Gears inside the game
  • Codes that are being transferred through the game

Opt In: Carnival Splendor

What was the nature of the problem the ship experienced?
There was a fire on the ship, which broke the engine and propellers that left the passengers stranded for about 2 months

What repairs were required?
The Carnival needed an engine repairs while the passangers needed there money back^_^

What impact did the unexpected arrival of the cruise ship have on the local economy?
The unexpected arrival suprised the mechanics of San Diego but repairs began the week after it arrived.
The passengers got free air travel and a refund which wasn't as big of a blow to San Diego but more to the Carnival travel line.

Graphic Design

My Car: came from EDN- Voice of the Engineer magazine issue 17 on page 15
The advertisement is for a new more eco-friendly GPS in Ford cars
Philip's Car: Volvo new season magazine
2011 C70 hard-top convertable Volvo
Does it fit the criteria???

YES IT DOES!!!

1. What are trends? Why is it important to identify them prior to graphic design?
Trends- are the way technology, fashion, etc. are moving
Trends help the audience stay tuned

2. How does human nature play a role in how a product is marketed to a specific demographic group?
The product is marketed for the human nature to stop consider what the add is stating and continue reading.
3. How is a potential audience identified?
The add talks about the way the product can make life better for the buyer.
4. What must you discover about the target audience prior to graphic design?
The age group of the audience or the type of audience
example: the car add won't be as successful if 8 year olds are looking at it because they can't drive

"Opt In" post

I didn't watch the Superbowl so i don't have a favorite commercial but the Volkswagen commercial was very funny.

I believe that BMW is in pretty good shape but they will probably have to sell about 20 new cars.

Cost of Superbowl Commercial Time:
Guess: $500,000
Real: A 30-second ad in Super Bowl XLV (2011) on CBS costs between $2.5 million and $2.8 million.
The record cost for a Super Bowl commercial was during the 2010 Super Bowl on NBC, when ads averaged $3 million a piece.
People all around the world can see the Super Bowl. But when it comes to Superbowl vs the World Cup(soccer) more people watch that by almost 1000 million people because soccer is a universal sport

I think in the United States the advertising is good during the Super Bowl because TONS of people watch football. I bet the 4 out of 5 houses in America have some type of football fan gear. But advertising outside of the U.S. might not be as good, for example, in Europe "football" means what it says a foot and a ball which to Americans means soccer.

Content Is King

Answers:
1. I love to play tennis and I play tennis 5 days a week for at least 1 hour. I also love to collect weird and fun hats, for example, I have a hat that looks like it's eating my head when I wear it.

2. I believe that online game companies use blogging the most because of the constant ads on Facebook and Blogspot.

3. I'm not a super fan about blogging because it's up for the whole world to see but if I had to blog it would probably be about things closely related to me

Visual Design Elements and Principle

6 Visual Design Elements
Line
Color
Space
Form/ Shape
Texture
Value

5 Visual Design Principles
Balance
Rhythm
Emphasis
Unity
Proportion and Scales

Map of the USA
  • Line- Longitude and latitude lines and state border lines
  •  Color-there's a variety of different colors like blue and green
  •  Shape- the United States of America is shaped that way
  •  Texture- you can see the bumpiness of the mountains
  •  Value-some parts of the map are brighter than others
  •  Proportion- the key helps the reader know how far destinations are
Tree Trunk and Roots
  • Line-Multiple line of the roots
  • Shape-Helps absorb the most light and nutrients
  •  Texture- rough, with chips in the tree
  •  Unity- all the roots look different but they are all doing the same thing
  •  Balance- looks like a reflection but with a few changes
  •  Rhythm- goes in the pattern for better absorption
Fuzzy Rug
  • Line- different lines going in different directions
  •  Color- a bright orange color to match a certain space
  • Texture- looks fuzzy but a little bit rough
  • Unity- the rug is a bunch of different strands of string
  • Emphasis- can catch the eye
  • Balance- its different on both sides but can change to be even
Beta Fish
  • Line- lines on the fins
  • Color- multiple colors like dark purple
  • Space- spread out lines
  • Shape- helps the fish swim faster
  • Texture- looks bumpy on the tail but smooth on the body
  • Value- it goes from a bright yellow to a dark purple
  • Balance- colors reflect themselves
  • Rhythm- patterns cover the fish
  • Emphasis- the body is very plain making it stand out
  • Unity- the multiple colors make the fish look united

Cello
  • Line- the strings make your eyes look up and down the instrument
  • Color- it's made of wood so it's brown
  •  Space- theres lots of empty space outside and inside the cello
  • Shape- the shape helps it get a better sound
  • Texture- it's smooth but hard
  •  Value- the light makes the gloss on the instrument shine
  •  Balance- it has to be an exact reflection on both sides of the cello for the sound
  • Emphasis- since the bridge is a different color and the strings on ontop of it you notice it
  •  Proportion- cellos come in different sizes and so do the strings

Fast Touch

At the beginning of the period a group of us was challenged to pass a tennis ball as fast as we can and have everyone touch it. So my group knew we had to have our hands close. In order to make the passing faster we made a spiral with our hands, kinda like a swirly slide. We got under 2 seconds.

Survival

You are stranded on a raft with matches and some supplies, what's the most important:

My Choices
#1: A 25 liter container of water, a person can only go 3 days without water which makes it very important
#2: A 10 liter can of oil/ petrol mixture, you can start a fire with the oil and matches
#3: A fishing kit, able to catch food from sea

My Group's Choices
#1: A 25 liter container of water
#2: A case of army rations, needed as food
#3: A fishing kit

Coast Guards' Choices
#1: A shaving mirror, to signal using reflections
#2: A 10 liter can of oil/ petrol mixture
#3: A 25 liter container of water

This was a critical thinking and problem solving activity that used communication and arguments to decide what to survive with. I enjoyed this project but it was a "life or death" situation and we worked in groups.
